  • You can purchase an activation key and use it to activate the Microsoft Store version. If you install the app via Microsoft Store, you will see two options to unlock the pro version: By purchasing via Microsoft store and by entering the activation key.

Smart transparency mode enables you to take opacity to the next level! Unlike regular transparency, you can set different opacity levels for the background around the text/controls and the images.
And you can even set the blur level.
Note that this may work slowly on 4K and will work better for NVIDIA GPUs (make use of CUDA feature)
It should work better for apps that usually not showing images.
It is recommended to enable the native dark mode (not the dark mode by WindowTop) before enabling glass mode for the best quality.

Does what its supposed to do
To keep it simple, all I needed to do was to make my window transparent and it does that very well. My only criticism is if you pin the transparent window, it creates a red outline around the window which in my opinion defeats the purpose of transparency.

Great multipurpose app for a variety of projects.
I originally installed WindowTop to use overlay a ruler for a game I really liked to play that required it, but didn't have one implemented. After awhile my use of the app evolved to using the "Set Top" and "Opacity" features for timers, watching videos, drawing art, editing/working on spreadsheets, etc. It really helps me maximize the space and potential of my two monitors for whatever I'm doing.

    • Follow these steps:
      1. Right-click on WIndowTop tray icon
      2. Go to “WindowTop Pro” -> Click on the first item
      3. A new window should open. Click on the button “Activate / Buy now”
      4. A small window should open. In this window, you can paste the activation key.
      Paste the activation key and then click on “Activate now”

      At this point, if the key is valid, the program should be activated.

  9. Hello, as you said, the activation license key can be used for up to 3 computers. I’d like to know whether the license can be transferred between devices? I usually work in a VM, and I don’t want to buy a license every time I destroy the VM.

    • Hello, if you use the portable version (not the version you install) you should be safe.
      But please note that in the portable version some of the pro functionality is disabled and it is: dark mode pro and smart transparency
      Other pro functionalities such as the How to watch videos while working (PIP Mode) will be available also in the portable version.

      We plan to add option to remove computers from the activation key so you will able to use it as solution for the installed version.
      For now, if you don’t need the pro functionality that disabled in the portable version, the good option is to use the portable version.

      1. if you lose your license email, contact us on http://windowtop.info/contact and if we have a record of your purchase, we will send you the activation key.
      But it is highly recommended to backup the license key for your computer.

      2. We should provide option to remove computer from the license key. For now, there is no such option yet.
      If you want to transfer the license key to another computer, contact us about your request and we will do it for you.

    I LOVE IT. It’s probably one of my two favorite computer things (the other one is a foot switch/pedal, which means I can make things happen on my computer just by pressing one of the three pedals at my feet).

    I really loved this software. I came across with it because I was trying to solve some issues while streaming on Twitch. I wanted to have my real chat on top of the game, but also, being able to modify transparency and size.

    One thing I’m not sure if its possible: Can you capture an specific part of one window? For example: I would like to capture only the “chat” box of an entire website I’m navigating. It would be interesting if you can “Crop” your selection and then shrink it as a pop up window. Is this possible or it’s not a function implemented on the PRO version?

    • Yes, it is a bug.
      It was never implemented that way that clicking on it opening the toolbar.
      But it should do it if you click on it.
      So need to fix it.

    • Hello, you first need to enable the button in the toolbar.
      To do it, right-click on the WIndowTop icon in the tray and then Settings–>All Settings.
      In the window that opened, select the toolbar icon.
      There you will see a list of buttons that you can enable/disable.
      Find the “Dark-Dark” option and enable it.
      Now you should have the button enabled.

      Open the toolbar on some windows and you will see the new button.
      When you click on the button, dark mode will be activated.
      You will also see the option “Filter Images”. This option is unchecked by default and will work only on premium mode.
      To enable the “Smart dark mode”, just click on this option.

    • The desktop version gets updates faster because there is no need to wait for Microsoft to approve each time a new update is released.
      But the downside is that there is no automatic/self-update functionality and you will have to reinstall the last version yourself.

      This is unlike the store version… The store version comes with automatic updates and self-updates – You install it once, and it will update itself later when there is a new update.

    Hello there, just purchased the pro version and already looking how useful this gem is. How about opacity controlled by the scroll wheel ? also save window configuration for top window is very useful, but in my humble opinion it would be even more useful if it could also save the exact position of the window on the screen when it was closed, how about that? Finally, how about if I set top two applications (browser and outlook for example), could you make it so that IF they intervene with each other they must move/resize themselves on the screen so that they are both set top and revealing all their content ?

    • Hello, sorry about the issue. Please uninstall the Microsoft store version and reinstall it again. After that, the app should be activated using your Microsoft account. The activation is not by a key, it is handled by the Microsoft store because you purchased it from their store.

      • Thanks for reply – have just uninstalled MS free Windowtop and from MS store downloaded again – this was unsuccessful – Error from MS “Something happened on our end”

        Note MS said I owned this app (I never paid MS for this app, i could not pay MS despite setting up PayPal account, the app could not even be added to cart — so I PayPal bought from you (i.e. NOT MS store)

        So, MS did not download my free app yet even though I uninstalled before download attempt, the app shows up in recently installed in start menu – but this app now does not work.

        I think i have a problem with MS Store – it says I own the (free) app, it would not let me pay MS store (hence I paid you by PayPal and you gave me a key which I cannot apply) and MS does not know that I bought the app (but not from MS)

      • Hello – uninstalled again and now installed from setup.exe from (???) GitHub (or something)

        The installation showed various windows, e.g. where to install etc, and it appears to function (i.e can see three options eg size down) – HOWEVER for some reason the program “remembered” that with the first time with free app usage I allowed the options to appear when hovering over the minimize button – so the uninstall never fully uninstalled “everything” – also with this reinstall I never saw the many pages of help (which for instance told me about using minimize for options) – THE VERY FIRST TIME with MS free app I saw all of this – (but had not purchased yet at that time) – so maybe uninstall is not perfect (for what ever reason) – so how for me to “clean up” after uninstall for “residual stuff for WindowsTop” – AND THEN DO A FRESH CLEAN INSTALL?

But how can I access at least one of these, when your app only show me three choices : Purchase on MicrosoftStore, purchase a key, or activate a key? Where have you hidden the “free” option you actually showed us, to at least have a try?

    • It is a free trial for 30 days; after 30 days, it is still accessible but with limited functionality.
      When you install the app for the first time, it starts the free trial automatically. You don’t need to start the trial mode yourself. It should already start after you install it.

    Hello. Do you no longer offer a 30-day free trial of the pro version? I tried both the MS store version and the one downloadable from this site but upon first-time opening of either one, I’m slapped with a free trial has expired message. I swear I have never downloaded, tried nor used this software/app until today. Seeking clarification. If it’s truly the case that the free trial isn’t offered anymore, I suggest you update all relevant pages and descriptions immediately to avoid misleading people. This is very off-putting!

    • Hello, if your statement is true, it is a bug.
      The trial check implementation uses a unique computer ID (based on your hardware).
      Even if you purchase the computer from someone else and do a complete Windows reinstall, the computer ID is the same.
      So, if someone else used the app, it will still count.
      This is usually not reported, but it is still wrong behavior.
      I will work on a solution for this problem.

    If I upgrade or format my computer, will it be considered as an additional computer under the license? Also, are the three computers tied permanently to the license, or can I swap between which three computers are covered at any time? Thanks.

    • Hello, no. However, after you update the BIOS or hardware, the app may think it is a different computer.
      In the worst-case scenario, you have an option via the program to reset the activation key usage so that you will continue to be able to use the license. In this scenario, the program will ask you to do it, so you will not even need to go to the license settings yourself.
      In any case, you can always contact support, and I will help you with license issues.
